In the second week of school we celebrated Waitangi Day so Miss Hix read us an amazing book called 'Aotearoa - the New Zealand Story' by Gavin Bishop. She also taught us about the Treaty of Waitangi and what this meant for the early people of New Zealand.
Mrs Togiaso read us another book called 'The Treehouse Treaty' and we discussed how this story related to the Treaty of Waitangi. Next, we began thinking about what type of class we wanted to create in Pītau 1 this year. In small groups we completed a 'Y-chart' about what we wanted our class to 'look like, sound like and feel like' and then we shared our ideas with the rest of the class.
Lots of our groups came up with similar ideas such as: 'We want our class to feel peaceful and calm.' Leonie 'We want our class to feel like home.' Cailyn 'We don't want a class full of rubbish! We want it to be clean and tidy.' Keita 'We want a happy class.' Miihaea 'We want to fun and have people be nice to other people.' Taliauli 'We want our class to feel supportive.' Patience 'We want people to put effort into their learning.' Dominic
From these statements we created our own Pītau 1 Class Treaty and all of us agreed that we would try our best to stick to our class treaty promises so that we could create a safe and comfortable place to learn. Throughout this learning we also focused on our school value of 'Connected' and the key competency of 'Relating to Others' as we had to work in teams to complete the different activities.
